IoT can mean different things, depending on who you are and what you work with! Historically, we started connecting “things” – other than phones – a long time ago, and in fact there are lots and lots of sensors, alarms and payment machines connected using 2G still today.
But with 4G and 5G, we expect the market for connected things to really take off! Due to often fundamentally different traffic and patterns and other requirements compared to e.g. smartphones, there were adjustments made in the LTE specifications to better serve the IoT segment. NB-IoT and LTE-M are targeting this growing market. And where this will bring us in a few years with wide 5G deployment – perhaps nobody really knows.
